Welcome to Professor Gebbia's Discussion Forum

Welcome! Most of you must be taking Psy2100 - Child Psychology with me. I believe that we will have an exciting and informative semester, I have much planned, which I hope will enhance the coursework.

This blog will be where you will be required to comment and post your thoughts. I also encourage you to post links and information which will be both helpful and interesting to your classmates.

To get started, please consider the following:

Why should we, as professionals in fields related to Psychology, study the development of children? What importance could it have, and how could it impact us in our chosen fields?

I wish you all the best,
and most importantly . . . enjoy!

  1. My major is elementary Bilingual education, as a future professional in these field linked to psychology I think is critical to know and understand the growth and development of children. This is very important for me as a future teacher to know the characteristics and complexity of children behaviors in the classroom. As they grow they evolve into different personalities, and if we have knowledge on their needs in their development, it is much easier to provide them with a better learning experience. Studying the development of children will give me a large advantage in my chosen field. In addition, I will use this knowledge to help them learn in a more comfortable and adequate environment.

  2. As a professional in fields related to Psychology, should study the development of children, so we could better relate to the children that we are going to deal with. I'm studying to be an educator, and is very importand for me to undestand how children develop, and that they are all different in their own unique way. It will not only make an impact in my chosen field, but also in my every day activity with my children and others around me by communicating better as a child develops.

  3. As an early childhood education major I feel it is extremely important to take this child development course. As a teacher it important to know how children function and how they develop. Teachers need to know how children think at their age so that they can know which way to aproach things, making their learning experience alot easier.

  4. It is important for people in many fields to study different types of psychology. As a speech correction major I feel that it is important for me to study child development because a large amount of the patients I will be working with someday will be children. By understanding how children develop it will help me shape lessons that will be on par for teaching different types of children. Of course it will take a lot of experience to get everything down pat, however, by studying child development it will give me a better idea of what to expect and how to handle certain situations.

  5. You are all right about the impotance of understanding a child's developmental level. Thare is nothing more frustrating for both the child and the professional to try to teach something that is developmentally inappropriate. In some cases it can actually be detrimental.

  6. Hi. My major is Early Childhood Education. I plan to be a full time teacher when I graduate. I believe that taking a class on child psychology will help future teachers and other professionals better understand the children that they wish to work with. If you do not understand how a child's brain works, how could you possibly help them?
When I was sixteen I worked as a camp counselor and I did not know much about children back then. I remember a child did not put away her clothing in the locker. I first thought how could she not know what to do with her clothing. I went to my sister at my break and asked her about the situation. She said very simply the child is too young to know to do that. She was never taught this simple responsibility of taking care of her own clothing.
I believe that as new teachers and other professionals it is important to understand the child's thought process or else we professionals really wont be very good.

  7. Like many of my fellow classmates, I am also an Early Childhood Education Major. I have always felt like working with children was my destiny. I understand that at times, they are hard to deal with, and I’m willing to be patient with them. Studying the Development of children will help me to further understand the child in every stage of its life. Also, all people in the field of psychology should understand the development of children because it is a major part of psychological research. Most of the great Sigmund Freud’s work dealt with childhood research.
In our class, already I have learned so much. I have a few Nieces in nephews and I find myself studying their behavior to see if Freud’s five stages of psychosexual development are true for them. In some ways it is, and in some ways it is not. For example, My 18 month old niece would be in the anal stage instead of oral. She has long given up her pacifier and putting things in her mouth. She watches her mom and copy’s everything she sees. Already at 18 months she is almost potty trained.

  10. In the Psychology field, in order to understand an individual’s behavior we should go back to that person’s childhood and find the roots of the problem. It is very important to study the development of children because; it is at the moment of birth where everything starts. The early stages of life are crucial in every human being and based on a child’s upbringing, a variety of results can occur.
As an elementary education major it is a must to take a class in child psychology. As a future teacher, I need to be prepared to face many different situations that may occur while I teach, and having a better understanding and knowledge of children, their behavior and development; it would definitely help me in my job.

  11. My name is terry Vaughn. MY major is physical education. The reason we as teachers and educators need to study the development of children is because for one we are going to be working with them the rest of our lives if we do become teachers. Another thing is that to a certain point we have to somewhat think like they think. Being a gym teacher we want to encourage that every student get involved and participate in the activities. So we have to make it entertaining for the children and that’s why we would have to think like them. If we can catch their attention with things that they like they’re more likely to participate.

  13. As an elementary education major it is crucial to learn about psychology. The study of psychology is imperative because as a teacher I should be able to know what is running through the minds of my children. I should know why they act the way they act and try to help them. Educating children plays a enormous part in psychology due to the fact that as a teacher I am trying to help children know the basics. Everyone is different and so every child does not learn the same. In psychology you are taught the different ways children learn and if I apply all the different techniques that I am taught then I will be able to get through to the children and they will leave my class knowing something new. Without psychology in my major I believe that we would not be able to teach just because of the simple fact that we would not know how to get the child interested or we wouldn’t know how to understand the kids.

  14. I think it is really important for psychologists to study children just because I believe that they are the future generation. Learning how children develop psychologically as they grow, can influence their behavior and thinking. This will also help psychologists prepare to understand the childhood influences on later adulthood. With being a occupational therapy major, it is important to know and understand children's cognitive abilities.I look foward in learning more about children for my future occupation.

  15. My major is psychology I believe professionals considering psychology should study the development of children because their are a lot of experiences a child undergoes. these experiences influence a lot of what we believe and think about as an adult. someone in the field of psychology should understand this because it can help them understand the adult or the person better depending on what field in psychology their working on. Some people develop certain things as a child and with the understanding of how this occurred it can help you understand anyone better.

  16. Well, I think that You can't understand where you are going until you know where you have been. Understanding a child's development is key to understanding and resolving adutl issues. IF you think about it, whenever someone goes to seek professional help from a clinician, usually questions concerning that adults childhood are addressed within those sessions. Why is that? I think it yields a better understanding of why the adult is having the difficulty they are experiencing. So I'm not sure who came up with that quote of "You can't know where you're going until you know where you have been" but it rings true in regards to this subject matter.

Knowing why children do certain things they do, and what is the drive behind their actions is a very important thing a teacher must know. Taking a course on the development of children is a perfect way to enhance your teaching abilities.

  18. Being that I am persuing a master's in speech pathology, psychology plays a large role in my future field and life in general. 19. Since I currently am working towards my BA in physical and health education I plan to work with children. Eventually I plan on going back to school and getting a masters in either guidance or administration. In either case, Knowing not only how children develop mentally and physically plays a major role in one's career. To begin, understanding how a child should develop physically will help me notice a student who may have or is developing some type of physical disablity. This would allow me to not only get this child the proper help, however, also to notice before the child gets hurt. Picking up on the behaviors of a child may help one as a professional to discover abusive behavior and or learning disablities. To have a strong career as an educator one needs a strong base in understanding how children work at the most inner levels. One may never be able to fully understand a child, however, the more knowledge one has the better.
